PAK vs SL Super 4 Match Preview
Pakistan started brilliantly in the tournament by thrashing Nepal. They bowled well in the rain-hit match against India on 2nd Sep. All three pacers took 10 wickets together. But, the rain didn’t allow them to bat in the 2nd innings and the match got cancelled. Both teams shared points and advanced to the Super 4 round.
Their 2nd match of the Super 4 stage was against India. The skipper Babar Azam won the toss and elected to bowl first. They bowled well in the first few overs but then Indian openers attacked them and they lost their way. Shadab Khan gave the breakthrough by picking up Rohit Sharma’s wicket and then immediately Shaheen got rid of Shubman Gill.
The rain interrupted the play when Virat Kohli and KL Rahul were on the crease. There was a reserve day and the match resumed. Pakistan completely lost their line and lengths and conceded too many runs. They couldn’t pick up a wicket and India put up a total of 356 for 2. Both Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah got injured and are doubtful for the remaining matches.
Pakistan’s batting was an absolute failure. They struggled against the quality Indian bowling attack. Imam-ul-Haq went cheaply on Bumrah’s dream delivery and then Hardik Pandya got rid of Babar Azam with a top-class delivery. Wickets continued to fall and not a single batter could reach the 30-run mark and they lost the match by 228 runs.
Team Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka’s performance has been good but they need to work on their batting. In the first match, they struggled against Bangladesh with the batting but won the match by 5 wickets. They had a better performance against Afghanistan in the next match and won it by just 2 runs. Some miscalculations about the overs left in the Afghanistan camp and Sri Lanka qualified for the Super 4 round.
They met Bangladesh in the Super 4 round and once again got the better of them. It was a complete performance, especially with the ball. Bangladesh won the toss and opted to bowl first. Sri Lanka had a decent start but then the openers fell. Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama stitched a fine partnership. Mendis’ 50 and Sadeera’s 93 took their total to 257 for 9 in 50 overs. In response to this, Bangladesh couldn’t find rhythm in their batting and wickets continue to fall from one end. The skipper Dasun Shanaka, Maheesh Theekshana and Matheesha Pathirana picked up 3 wickets each and Sri Lanka won by 21 runs.
The next match against India was a crucial one. Sri Lanka bowled beautifully and put pressure on Indian batters by introducing spin early on in their innings. India kept losing wickets and reached 213 runs. Dunith Wellalage picked up a fifer and Charith Asalanka’s 4-fer were stand-out performances. Their batting faltered initially which got steady when Dhananjaya de Silva and Dunith Wellalage made a lovely partnership of 63 runs. Things were going their way but the former threw his wicket to Ravindra Jadeja which sealed the game for India and Sri Lanka lost the match by 41 runs.
